| 授業概要 | Classes follow the same pattern in every class to increase your vocabulary and gain confidence in speaking. First you preview the vocabulary. Then you listen to real life conversations, picking out first the main ideas then the details. Next, you practice a conversation with a partner then make your own conversation based on the model. Then you use what you have learned to have a group discussion. Homework is not required but students who want to do follow-up work outside class can do the grammar review and “solo” listening and writing activities using the self- study CD. |
| 授業計画 | Introducing yourself and others. Formal and casual introductions. Social conversations – getting to know people. How do you feel? Expressing emotions. Making travel plans, comparing travel destinations. Talking about your culture. Explaining cultural differences. Talking about past experiences. Making requests and offers – could you, shall I? Expressing and comparing opinions. Talking about the news. How to agree or disagree. World problems. Discuss solutions to world problems. Likes and dislikes. Using comparatives and superlatives. Practice for the speaking test. |
| 評価方法 | 80% for class participation, assignments and attendance. 20% for an in-class speaking evaluation. |

| 授業概要 | An essential skill for Japanese students who wish, at some point, to travel, study or work abroad is to express their opinions on issues in a confident and coherent way. In Western countries like the U.S., the U.K. and Canada, individuals are often asked their opinions and they are often met with opposing views. In many cases, individuals are then judged by how well they can defend their views – in other words by how well they can debate. This is sometimes difficult to do for Japanese students because, as the result of cultural differences, they are not used to giving their point of view. This class will allow students to take sides on different issues, presented mainly in articles, and to debate these issues with their classmates. In this way, issues will be discussed and debating tactics will be examined. |
| 授業計画 | Debate and discussion/ critical thinking/ analysis of articles/ presentation skills/ formulating one’s own views and perspectives |
| 評価方法 | Final evaluations for this class will be based on total performance including attendance, class participation and attitude, homework, reports, end of term presentations and/or examination. All aspects of the class will be essential for a good grade. |

| メッセージ | There is no need to be shy to express your thoughts in English in a clear way. This class will give you the chance to find out what you really think about different issues. Some of the issues we look at will be funny and some will be more serious, but all will help you get to know the thoughts of yourself and others. Come on and join in the debate! |
