| 授業概要 | Nearly everybody loves music, and music can also be a great way to increase your understanding of a language. In this course we will listen to and examine some of the great types of music and song that have been sung in English. Music genres that we will hear might include folk, rock, punk, blues, jazz, dance, reggae and hip-hop. We will both listen to these types of music and analyse the lyrics of these songs. In this way, we will learn about some of the history of the genres, some of the important issues that they raise, and the particular English idioms, slang and other expressions that they have popularized. Students will be encouraged to find their own favourite songs and present these to the class, explaining both their context (who, where and when?) and meaning (what is the song about?). |
| 授業計画 | This course will involve: Listening comprehension skills/ Learning some history of popular English music/ Practicing different idioms and other forms of natural English/ Identifying different music genres/ Speculating about the meaning of songs/ Discussing and debating issues/ Presentations and group work. |
| 評価方法 | Final evaluations for this class will be based on total performance including attendance, class participation and attitude, homework, reports, end of term presentations and/or examination. All aspects of the class will be essential for a good grade. |

| メッセージ | Music is, for me, one of the best ways to learn to appreciate the beauty of a language. English is especially lucky because there are millions of songs, in many different genres, that have been written in English. Each of these many styles use English in different ways with their own particular expressions. We will study these differences. English songs are also used to educate people about various political, social and environmental issues. We will also study this aspect of the music. If you like music as much as I do please take this course. Students are NOT encouraged to take this course if they have already taken ESP308 with me last year. |
