| 授業概要 | This course will focus on some selected issues in contemporary peace selected. Modern war has become much more destructive， but it remains widespread. Why do we find war so attractive， even addictive? It is necessary to understand its attraction，if we hope to end war. |
| 授業計画 | This intensive course will be conducted July 18-21(periods 1，2and3 each day).It is essential that students be preparede before class， by reading the texts and being ready to discuss them. |
| 評価方法 | Grading will be based on: 1)attendance， 2)class participation， which includes leading discussions and taking part in them， 3)a seminar papaer due after the last class. The class will be conducted in an informal seminar style. |

| メッセージ | Since the classes will be conducted mostly in English， they will sometimes be difficult， but the subject matter is important and interesting. I will do my best to help you. Let￥’s have a party after the last class! The text is “War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning”，by Chris Hedges.The original English version is recommended， but is is also okay to consult the Japanese translation. Students should read this book before the course begins. There will also be two papers to read in English by the teacher(Loy)， and some videos to watch together. |
