| 授業概要 | Noone disagrees that protecting the environment is important. Noone, however, seems to agree as to how Nature should be cared for. The aim of this course is to explore issues surrounding the environmental debate. Reading and writing are the key language components of the course. Students improve on these language skills by analyzing news articles and responding to them through by writing their opinions. These writings will be used at the end of semester to produce a class booklet. |
| 授業計画 | Students will start by reviewing the key elements of paragraph writing. The emphasis here will be on how to state and argue an opinion. Students will then be introduced to the techniques of good reading. They will learn how to understand, summarize and paraphrase a given news article or any other text. Students will also learn how to research about environmental issues using the Internet. |
| 評価方法 | Class activities are intensive. Attendance is, therefore, very important. Much of the work is done during class hours. Students may spend up to one hour per week for their off-class activities that may include online search or interviewing fellow students. Grading is based on 1) attendance, 2) active participation in group and class activities and 3) individual writings. |
