Students will read (sometimes bad) writing by ‘good’ English users， and show their understanding and personal opinions of these readings in English. Although there will be some focus on reading skills (distinguishing between fact/opinion， skimming， scanning etc.)， students will also learn to become alert and informed readers. Vocabulary knowledge and test scores are great pluses but critical thinking and world awareness are needed to succeed well in this course. Writing short reports will be required.
At first students will spend time learning about themselves and others through ‘critical thinking’ exercises. Critical thinking is an essential part of becoming an alert user of English and will be continued throughout the course. Students will be checked to see if they are familiar with some essential reading skills. Later， students will encounter media distortions (in textbooks， publications， Internet). They will become aware how some writings are based on untruths， urban legends， hysteria， ‘PR’， poor writing). Students should realize some writing ‘published’ on the Internet should be NOT trusted! The course-ending assignment will be a bibliography of readings related to students’ choice of topic.
In this course， students will learn to value their own personal opinions， and become owners of their own interest. They hopefully will learn to be good conscientious users of resources and not just trust or overly depend on them. Students do not have to be good writers or speakers but they will be expected to demonstrate their aspirations. I prefer students’ own grammar than using translation software. If I find out you are using translation you will have to write it again in your own words.

評価方法

This course is based on students’ satisfactory fulfilling my expectations in:Participation 50% (includes being involved in class， (no sleeping or just sitting)， writing in-class responses， and showing ‘accountability’ to the instructor);A reading skills test 15%;2 reading assignments 20%;Bibliography on student’s choice 15% (including outline)Accountability means full attendance， steady participation， timely submission， and checking with the instructor.
