Students from those courses will be expected to choose different topics for their final proposals. This course is taught in English， and it prepares students to express their views in English persuasively and convincingly， through a deeply personal and well-reasoned ‘values-based’ perspective. Through careful thinking and preparation， students will see the necessary connection between good writing and good speaking. Imagination and fluency are wonderful to have but not sufficient to leave lasting impressions. In the beginning students will spend time learning about themselves and others through ‘critical thinking’ exercises through which they will become aware of their core values. They will use thoughts and values to build a ‘manifesto’. (If the class is large， these manifestos may be done by small groups). Students will use these manifestos to develop opinions on topics， with implications for society， culture， and the world. They will interact with others through discussion and write responses about them. Students at the end will present individual proposals for action in written and oral form.Students will learn to value their own personal opinions， become owners of their own work， and not be tempted to copy or plagiarize better writing. Writing their own manifestos will educate students to appreciate their own thinking as well become skilled in using other materials.Students do not have to be good writers or speakers but they will be expected to demonstrate their aspirations. Students must use their own grammar and not translation software. Students found using translation will have to write again in their own words.

授業計画

(Based on expectation of a 15-week term; changes will depend on future schedule and student interests)
Week/Lesson
1 Introduction; expectations; a short test; writing activity
2 Checking writing; observation activity; reaction paper
3 Reaction paper DUE; Values activity; building a manifesto
4 Improving， presenting， judging manifestos
5 Manifestos DUE (including presentations); reaction paper
6 Reaction paper DUE; responding to a current topic
7 Responding to a current topic
8 Responding to a current topic; reaction paper
9 Reaction paper DUE; preparing a proposal: elements
10 Preparing a proposal: written/oral
11 Proposal outlines DUE; thinking activity
12 Proposal conferences; evaluating proposals
13 PROPOSAL PRESENTATIONS
14 PROPOSAL PRESENTATIONS
15 PROPOSAL PRESENTATIONS (finish); elections

評価方法

This course is based on students’ satisfactory fulfilling my expectations in;Participation 40% (includes attendance (no sleeping or just sitting)， accountability through contact with instructor and in-class responses);Assignments 60%;3 reaction papers 20%;Manifesto 20%;Proposal 20% (includes outline and oral & written presentation)This course is based on the expectation of ‘accountability’.
