授業概要 This class will focus on pair and group speaking activities in which students can discuss opinions and debate issues relevant to everyday life. Skills students will develop will include organizing ideas, explaining opinions and giving reasons. Students will also learn how to support an opinion and refute opposing ideas. The focus will always be on communicating ideas on topics that are within our experience.

City life, living in the suburbs or country life?
Traditional culture or modern culture?
Consumerism and the environment.
Raising children, discipline, nuclear families, caring for elderly parents, bi-cultural marriage.
Education issues – school rules, cram schools.
Friendship – what makes a good friend?
Are cars good or bad?
Ethical fashion, child labor.
Local or global?
Violence on TV.
Cloned beef, cloned pets.
評価方法 80% for class participation and assignments. 20% for an in-class test.

メッセージ In this class you will focus on expressing ideas and opinions in a clear and logical way. Formal debates will not be required but a willingness to communicate in English is essential.
