| 授業概要 | For an introduction to Western thought， we will read (in Japanese) and discuss Jostein Gaarder’s book ‘Sophie’s World: a novel about the history of western philosophy.’ For an overview of world history， we will watch a BBC video series: ‘The World’ (in Japanese)， 26 episodes.These will be supplemented with other videos and lectures. |
| 授業計画 | We will read and talk about the following thinkers whose philosophy is discussed in ‘Sophie’s World’: the Pre-Socratics Socrates Plato Aristotle Augustine Aquinas Descartes Spinoza Locke Hume Berkeley Kant Hegel Kierkegaard Marx Darwin Freud Sartre In addition， several other videos will be shown and discussed， time permitting: for example， ‘Gandhi’ and Kurosawa’s ‘Ikiru’. |
| 評価方法 | There will be two tests: in July (40%) and at the end of the year(60%). It is very important to attend classes. |
