授業概要 This class is designed to enable the students to express their opinions with confidence through debates. The students will learn basic skills for supporting and refuting opinions. They will not only learn how to make rebuttal arguments but will also be able to improve their English speaking skills.
授業計画 The class will cover 9 basic steps for beginners to learn how to debate. They will learn how to support opinions with reasons, how to support reasons with evidence and how to organize information into a coherent message. In addition, each will learn how to refute explanations, how to challenge evidence and how to organize refutations into a coherent message. The basic procedures for delivery, brainstorming and prioritizing will be taught.
評価方法 Grades on this course will be determined by the following criteria:
Regular attendance 30% (If a student misses more than 3 classes, he/she will fail the course). Being more than 10 minutes late for the class three times will count as one absence. Being more than 25 minutes late is considered one absence.
Participation and Attitude 40% (The more you speak and are prepared the better your grades. Mistakes are good. They show that you are trying.
Final Presentation 30%
