授業概要 “Education” in high school and university is usually about listening to and reading a lot of information. Then we usually take a test or write a long report. In the end, the topic we study seems like only a bunch of ideas that have no life or connection to our lives. In this class, we will try to make learning more dynamic and participatory. Action Research is a way of studying in which we get actively involved in the topic we study. Often times, our research helps the people we are researching about. For example, if we research about an environmental problem, we get involved in the problem and use our research to help solve the problem. In this way, this class will involve cooperating, and thus speaking and communicating, with other students and the teacher-students may even choose to work together on the same research topic.
授業計画 This class will focus on intermediate to advanced level students of English. It will use any means necessary to learn – discussions, lectures, videos, field trips, etc. The students will spend the entire semester working on one large comprehensive research project. Students will be encouraged to create teams and work together on one project. However, individuals with a clear plan may work by themselves. Students will present their research project as one final report, which will include written materials and an oral report, but which can also include other creative work such as an internet home page or a project activity, etc. In this way, students will actively use all skill areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking). There will be no unit tests or final exam. Instead, students will have to show continuous progress and activity in their research through written and spoken updates to the class. In this way, regular attendance and active participation are very important in this class. Mr. Watts’ half of the class on Tuesday will not be coordinated with the Friday class-it will have a separate theme and content. The final grade will be coordinated with your Friday class performance.
