授業概要 This is an advanced level course for students who want to look at the difficult problem of peace and conflict in the world today. Students will watch parts of a BBC documentary made by reporters in several different countries experiencing war or conflict.If you have never heard of Peace Studies before, please read how the following teachers describe it.The Director of the Peace Education Program at Columbia University, Betty Reardon, described her program as ’efforts to achieve human dignity for all people and to realize a viable global society on an ecologically healthy planet’.Elaine Brooks, who teaches Peace Studies at the University of New York wrote ’peace education involves developing in young people not just the desire to avoid war but also the desire to build a more peaceful world- one with peaceful relations among people, among nations, and between human beings and the natural environment’.EIC 206 Peace Studies and EIC 205 Peace Studies are linked but can be taken independently. In Mr. Bedelo’s class, students will look at the causes of war and conflict and the effect on civilians especially children.
授業計画 Students watch short episodes from the recent BBC documentary, ‘One Day of War’. Students will listen to what the soldiers say about who and why they are fighting . This will give insights into the causes of conflict in the world and possible solutions.
Students will do listening comprehension activities based on the documentary. As a follow-up, students can choose either group discussion or writing their ideas in a journal which they read to other students.

A child soldier in Somalia
A young woman guerilla fighter in Nepal
An Israeli soldier
A young Armenian conscript
A US soldier in Iraq
評価方法 Students who opt for discussion will give a short presentation on one of the situations they watched. Students who opt for writing in a journal will hand in their journal at the end of the semester and take a written test based on the situations in the documentary.
