授業概要 This course has two basic themes: 1) developing English reading and writing (and some speaking and listening) skills through using interactive computer activities; 2) learning about global issues and people’s movements.
授業計画 The Internet has created a revolution in communication. This revolution has been very important to regular people not working in the government or in big business. Many regular people have become concerned about the environment, human rights, war and peace, women’s issues, etc. Nowadays on the Internet we can learn so much about all these various different people’s groups which are connecting the local to the global. In this class, we will use our computers and develop our skills to learn more about all these different groups. The class will cover 3-4 basic units around different kinds of people’s groups, like environment, human rights, women’s issues, etc. Students will generally have the freedom to follow their own interests and to study about the groups they think are most interesting. Students will learn how to conduct research on the Internet. There will be a significant amount of reading in this course. During the first few weeks, this will be difficult. However, as students get used to reading more and more, their vocabulary develops quickly. By the end of the course, they can experience a great improvement in their ability to read and in the amount of time it takes to read articles. There will be no standard written tests; instead detailed written reports in English based on the student’s research at the end of each unit will be required. Each class will build on the ideas of the previous class, so it is very important to not miss classes since the student will be unable to follow the flow of study.
